Updates and random thoughts.

8 Mar

So everyone keeps asking me why I’m not blogging anymore… I am! Kind of. What I mean is, I haven’t consciously decided NOT to blog right now, I just have a lot on my plate. And I’m working on something big :) But you are going to have to wait and see what that is!

But I will give you a general update on my life. Since my last post, my life feels exactly the same and completely different simultaneously.  I will let you guys know that I went forward with a restraining order, it was approved the very same day, and served to  him within the week. That means no contact from him to me, my family, or in any third party fashion (so if someone comes up to me and is like “he told me to tell you such-and-such” that’s a violation of the order). I think that since the restraining order was passed, this is already the longest I’ve gone without any contact from him. And it feels amazing. I don’t care what he’s doing, or what he’s said about me (because I’m sure he’s had a lot to say after two sheriffs knocked on his door to hand-deliver an order containing every messed up thing he’s ever done to me–legally documented), basically he’s dead to me. It’s a huge weight off my shoulder, on top of the weight unloaded by finally opening up about everything! I used to feel so trapped in all of those memories, like I was stuck in a movie that I couldn’t leave. But letting everything out has been so freeing. Yay! So in conclusion, it was probably one of the scariest things I’ve ever done, but I cannot even express how happy I am that I did it. :)

Like I said, I have a lot on my plate right now. It’s been a crazy semester, I’m working two jobs, plus TA-ing a class. So I don’t have a ton to write about. And I can’t even really think of anything that I feel like giving you my opinion about… OH! Kony 2012. Let’s talk about that.

I have mixed feelings. At first I watched the movie and I was like “Hell yeah! Lets arrest this mofo! Kony 2012!” but I’ve kind of been doing other research, and I feel like the organization is a little on the sketchy side. Like, only 31% of their profits actually go to the cause. All organizations have running costs, but really? 31%? That’s an extremely low percentage. I’m widely uniformed about the issue, so correct me if I’m wrong, but hasn’t Kony also been pretty much inactive since like 2007 or 2008? I mean, I agree he needs to be arrested. And I’m all about raising awareness– I think it’s an awesome thing that this guy has gone viral in like 24 hours. It’s a messed up thing he did over there, and those kids deserve justice. BUT my question for you is– will donating money to a movement that will only put $30 of your $100 to good use, and seems to be more political than anything else, really help the whole situation? So again. Correct me if I’m wrong. It’s just a fuzzy matter and I don’t like the fact that the whole financial side of Invisible Children is SO fuzzy. But the awareness is awesome and I totally support that and I’ve reblogged a crapload of “KONY 2012” on tumblr and all that, but I originally wanted to buy one of those bracelets and maybe a t-shirt or something to donate to the cause but have since changed my mind about that.

A little something something from a friend of mine on tumblr:

Here you go from their own website – http://c2052482.r82.cf0.rackcdn.com/images/737/original/FY11-Audited%20Financial%20Statements.pdf?1320205055

Page 6 for the expenses. Direct Services to the Program is the figure we are after here. Which is 2.8million out of a total income of 13million. Which actually makes 21% there are some other bits and bobs in their that could have gone directly to support the cause but I can’t make it come up over 25% total.

As a comparison they spent 1.1million on filming and professional services, a further 1.1million on compensation (which is wages and other remuneration). So we’re up near a further 20% on those counts.

In addition they spent 1 million dollars on travel, which just seems ridiculous some of that travel has got to be frivolous (business class instead of economy etc.). If I saw 7.5% of revenue for a 13million dollar turnover in my company I would question it heavily. To see it for a charity is just plain odd.

Learning about a cause and wanting to help is a good thing, but stay skeptical and put your time and money in the place where it will make the most difference.

So. Anyways. There I went off on a tangent. (Obviously I’m back! haha) Spring break is next week and I’m soooo excited because I’m going to CHICAGO! Woooo! I’ve never been. So I’m pretty pumped :) A friend and myself are taking a bus down there and staying three nights in this GORGEOUS old-timey looking plaza hotel. With chandeliers and wooden everything and the whole nine yards.

And my 21st birthday is in two weeks! :D

That is all. Sorry this was boring. But I just wanted to let you know I’m not dead. :)

**OMG. Additional note: Since I last posted.. I had pretty much the best night of my life. A friend took me to see D.R.U.G.S. live, and HOLY BUCKETS throughout the night I pushed my way up to the very front, so I was in the first row right against the stage (close enough to touch Craig Owens– and touch him I did!). Pretty much dead center. It was so amazing! When Craig Owens came out I pretty much screamed like a 14 year old girl watching Twilight, but I couldn’t help it. He’s just too amazing. And beautiful. And perfect. <3 Anyways. I got a little bruised up, had to fight off this beast of a girl who was trying to squish me, and I had no voice the next day, but it was totally worth it. Best. Night. Ever. Ok, NOW that is all.

I took all those :)
